Espiritu Santo (known as Santo by the locals) is the largest island in the archipelago of Vanuatu.
Blessed with some of the best beaches in Vanuatu, Santo is largely untouched. Inland it is covered with high mountains and lush rainforest. The eastern coast, on which Moyyan is located, has safe and beautiful white sand beaches. Abundant fish and colourful coral can be found in the warm waters just off the beaches.
Inland, Santo is full of surprises, with limestone swimming holes, towering mountains, traditional villages, a spectacular golf course, caves and jungle.
Santo is famous for the world class scuba diving at Million Dollar Point and the wreck of the SS Coolidge. The Coolidge is renowned as one of the world’s best wreck dives. The former luxury liner was requisitioned as a troop carrier in World War II. Lying close to shore, the Coolidge still retains many artefacts from when it sank in 1942. Your dive begins a short walk from the beach.
During World War II, the island was a military base for thousands of US troops. The wharves, landing fields and military equipment left at the end of the war can still be seen today. One such soldier during World War II was the author James A Michener. Santo was his inspiration for 'Tales of the South Pacific', the story on which the great musical 'South Pacific' is based.
Espiritu Santo has safe drinking water, and 240V AC electricity. Public transport comes in the form of taxis and mini buses. There is an international airport and the wharf easily accommodates luxury cruise ships and yachts.
